Understanding Child Custody And Visitation

In Texas, child custody is called conservatorship. In most cases, judges order joint conservatorship of children unless there is a strong reason, such as abuse, why one parent should have sole custody.

Joint managing conservatorship means that both parents will share the right to make decisions with respect to religious upbringing, medical care and education.

In most cases, one parent will be the primary managing conservator and the children will live with that parent most of the time. The other parent will have visitation rights according to a schedule. You and your ex can negotiate a time-sharing plan that works for your family. If you cannot reach an agreement, a judge will modify the standard schedule to meet your family's needs. The parent with visitation usually pays child support to the primary managing conservator.

Child custody and child support can be modified in the future if your circumstances change.
